Jean Baptiste Camille Corot — French, 1796–1875 — French Barbizon School
Corot occupies a pivotal position between the Neoclassical landscape tradition and the Impressionism that followed. He trained in the studio of Achille-Etna Michallon and traveled extensively in Italy in the 1820s, producing plein-air oil studies whose clarity of light and structural restraint anticipated later French painting. Associated with the Barbizon School, he worked the forests of Fontainebleau alongside Théodore Rousseau and Daubigny, though he resisted strict allegiance to any group.
