Frederick Arthur Bridgman — American, 1847–1928 — American Orientalism
Frederick Arthur Bridgman was an American painter who became the leading figure in nineteenth-century American Orientalism. Born in Tuskegee, Alabama, he trained in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme, whose academic precision shaped his approach throughout his career. Beginning in 1872, Bridgman traveled extensively in Algeria and Egypt, filling sketchbooks with observed details of architecture, costume, and daily life that he would rework into finished canvases in his Paris studio.
