Jean Antoine Watteau — French, 1684–1721 — French Rococo
Watteau is the founding figure of the Rococo and the inventor of the fête galante, a genre the Académie Royale created specifically to admit him in 1717. Born in Valenciennes, a Flemish town only recently ceded to France, he absorbed the colorism of Rubens and the Venetians and brought a northern sensibility to Parisian taste.
