Kandinsky is widely credited as a pioneer of pure abstraction in Western painting. Trained in law and economics in Moscow before turning to art in Munich at the age of thirty, he co-founded Der Blaue Reiter in 1911 alongside Franz Marc, advancing a spiritual conception of art articulated in his treatise Concerning the Spiritual in Art.
