Frederic Edwin Church — American, 1826–1900 — Hudson River School

Frederic Edwin Church was the most prominent second-generation painter of the Hudson River School and the only direct pupil of Thomas Cole. He achieved international fame in the 1850s and 1860s with vast, meticulously detailed landscapes that combined the empirical observation of Alexander von Humboldt with theatrical scale and dramatic light.
