Piazza S Marco Looking East (1) Canaletto
Canaletto — Italian, 1697–1768 — Italian Vedutismo
Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, defined the Venetian veduta — the topographical view painting that flourished as both civic record and luxury object in eighteenth-century Europe. Trained initially as a theatrical scene painter under his father, he brought a stagecraft sense of perspective and lighting to his depictions of the Grand Canal, the Piazza San Marco, and the regattas and ceremonial spectacles of the Republic.
