Sophie Anderson, born Sophie Gengembre in Paris, became one of the most successful women painters working in Victorian Britain. Largely self-taught, she trained briefly under the portraitist Charles de Steuben before emigrating to the United States in 1848 with her family, where she met and married the British painter Walter Anderson. The couple eventually settled in England.
