Theodor Philipsen — Danish, 1840–1920 — Danish Impressionism
Theodor Philipsen was a Danish painter who introduced Impressionist concerns with light and atmosphere into late nineteenth-century Scandinavian art. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he traveled in France, Italy, and North Africa, and worked briefly alongside Paul Gauguin in Copenhagen in the mid-1880s, an encounter that loosened his palette and brushwork.
