Samuel John Peploe was a leading figure among the Scottish Colourists, the loose grouping that also included F.C.B. Cadell, Leslie Hunter, and J.D. Fergusson. Trained in Edinburgh and Paris, he absorbed the lessons of Manet early in his career before moving toward the heightened palette and structural rigor of Cézanne and the Fauves.
