Winslow Homer — American, 1836–1910 — American Realism
Winslow Homer is among the central figures of nineteenth-century American art, a painter who moved from illustration into oil and watercolor with a directness that came to define a national visual idiom. He began his career documenting the Civil War for Harper's Weekly, then turned to scenes of rural childhood, schoolyards, and coastal labor.
