Edmund Tarbell was a leading figure of the Boston School and a central member of The Ten, the group of American painters who exhibited together beginning in 1898 in protest against the conservative Society of American Artists. Trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and later in Paris at the Académie Julian, he absorbed both academic discipline and Impressionist color before forging a hybrid manner of his own.
