On A Venetian Balcony
Antonio Paoletti — Italian, 1834–1912 — Venetian Genre Painting
Antonio Ermolao Paoletti was a Venetian painter known for vivid genre scenes set in the streets, canals, and markets of late nineteenth-century Venice. Trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, he developed a tightly observed, brightly colored style that found a steady international market, particularly among British and American collectors visiting the city. His subjects favored everyday life: fruit sellers, fishermen, children at play, courtship in shaded calli.
