Peto was a Philadelphia-born painter whose still lifes of worn, ordinary objects were largely overlooked in his lifetime and rediscovered only in the 1940s, when scholar Alfred Frankenstein distinguished his work from that of William Harnett, under whose forged signature many of Peto's paintings had been sold.
