Julian Alden Weir — American, 1852–1919 — American Impressionism
Julian Alden Weir was a founding member of The Ten, the group of American painters who exhibited together beginning in 1898 in reaction against the academic establishment. Trained at the National Academy of Design in New York and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme, Weir initially resisted Impressionism, famously dismissing an early encounter with the French painters.
