Lionel Noel Royer — French, 1852–1926 — French Academic History Painting
Lionel Royer was a French academic painter best known for his historical and religious compositions, working in the conservative tradition that persisted in France through the late nineteenth century. A student of William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury, he exhibited regularly at the Salon and built much of his reputation on large-scale narrative canvases drawn from French national history.
