Hans Holbein The Younger — German, 1497–1543 — Northern Renaissance
Hans Holbein the Younger was among the most accomplished portraitists of the Northern Renaissance, remembered chiefly for the cool psychological precision of his likenesses. Born in Augsburg and trained in his father's workshop, he established himself in Basel, where he produced religious paintings, designs for woodcuts, and portraits of humanist circles including Erasmus. Religious upheaval in the city prompted his move to England, where he eventually became court painter to Henry VIII.
