Night Wanderer

Aksel Waldemar Johannessen — Norwegian, 1880–1922 — Norwegian Expressionism

Aksel Waldemar Johannessen worked in Kristiania (now Oslo) during the same period as Edvard Munch, though he remained largely unknown during his lifetime. Trained initially as a wood carver, he ran a costume workshop with his wife Anna while painting privately in the evenings. His subjects were drawn from the impoverished districts of the Norwegian capital: prostitutes, drunkards, grieving mothers, and laborers, rendered in heavy contours and somber, earth-bound color.
