Max Weber — American, 1881–1961 — American Modernism
Born in Białystok in the Russian Empire and brought to Brooklyn as a child, Max Weber became one of the earliest American painters to absorb the lessons of the Parisian avant-garde. Between 1905 and 1908 he studied in Paris, where he knew Matisse, Rousseau, and Picasso, and returned to New York carrying Cubism and Fauvism with him at a moment when American audiences were unprepared for either.
