Edward Moran was the eldest of the Moran brothers, a family of English-born American painters who shaped nineteenth-century American landscape and marine art. Trained initially as a weaver in Lancashire before emigrating to Philadelphia in 1844, he studied under James Hamilton and later in London at the Royal Academy.
