Henri Paul Motte was a French academic painter known for archaeological reconstructions of antiquity and dramatic episodes from ancient and medieval history. A pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts, he absorbed his teacher's commitment to historical accuracy and meticulous finish. Motte exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from the late 1860s onward, building a reputation for tableaux drawn from Carthaginian, Egyptian, and Gallo-Roman subjects.
