Meissonier was among the most commercially successful and critically lauded French painters of the nineteenth century, celebrated for small-scale genre scenes and military subjects executed with extraordinary technical precision. Working primarily in Paris and at his estate in Poissy, he built a reputation on cabinet pictures depicting cavaliers, musketeers, and figures in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century dress, painted with miniaturist exactness.
