Thomas Hill was an English-born American painter known for grand-scale depictions of the Western landscape, particularly Yosemite Valley and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Trained as a coach painter in Boston before studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he relocated to California in 1861, where the Sierra Nevada became his enduring subject.
