Cecilia Beaux — American, 1855–1942 — American Realism / Society Portraiture
Cecilia Beaux was among the most accomplished American portraitists of her generation, working in a refined realist idiom often compared to that of John Singer Sargent. Trained in Philadelphia and later in Paris at the Académie Julian, she absorbed the fluid brushwork of the French academic tradition while retaining a distinctly American directness.
