Thomas Pollock Anshutz was an American realist painter and an influential teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he studied under Thomas Eakins and later succeeded him as the institution's leading instructor. His 1880 canvas 'The Ironworkers' Noontime,' depicting laborers outside a Wheeling foundry, marked an early American engagement with industrial subject matter and is considered a transitional work between Eakins's gritty realism and the urban realism of the Ashcan School.
