Carl Rungius is regarded as the foremost North American painter of big game, the first artist of stature to devote his career almost entirely to the subject. Born in Prussia and trained at the Berlin Art Academy, he emigrated to the United States in 1894 after an invitation to hunt in Wyoming reshaped his ambitions.
