Theodore Robinson was among the first American painters to absorb Impressionism directly at its source, and he played a central role in transmitting the movement to the United States. Born in Vermont and trained in New York and Paris, he settled for extended periods at Giverny in the late 1880s, where his close friendship with Claude Monet shaped his mature work.
