John William Waterhouse — British, 1849–1917 — Late Pre-Raphaelite / Academic Classicism
John William Waterhouse worked in late-Victorian and Edwardian London, producing literary and mythological subjects that bridged the academic classicism of his early training with the lingering romanticism of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Born in Rome to English painter parents, he studied at the Royal Academy Schools and was elected a full Royal Academician in 1895.
