Description

Merzbild 1a (The Psychiatrist)

Kurt Schwitters — German, 1887–1948 — Dada / Merz

Kurt Schwitters was a German artist whose work bridged Dada, Constructivism, and early Modernism through his self-coined term Merz, derived from a fragment of the word Kommerz found in one of his collages. Working primarily in Hanover from the late 1910s onward, he assembled torn tickets, newsprint, fabric, wire, and discarded paper into compositions of unexpected formal balance, transforming refuse into rigorously organized abstraction.
