Pieter Aertsen, known in Italy as Pietro Lungo for his exceptional height, was a Netherlandish painter who worked in Antwerp and his native Amsterdam during the mid-sixteenth century. He is principally remembered for inventing the monumental market and kitchen scene, in which heaped displays of meat, vegetables, and household goods occupy the foreground while a small religious episode recedes into the background.
