Juan Martínez Abades was a Spanish painter and illustrator born in Gijón, Asturias, best known for his marine subjects and coastal scenes drawn from the fishing communities of the Cantabrian coast. He trained at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Madrid and exhibited at the Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes during the 1880s and 1890s, earning recognition for canvases depicting fisherfolk, harbors, and the working sea.
