Jan Lievens The Elder — Dutch, 1607–1674 — Dutch Golden Age
Jan Lievens was a Leiden-born painter and printmaker whose early career ran in close parallel with that of Rembrandt, with whom he shared a studio in the late 1620s. The two artists worked from the same models and influenced one another so directly that attributions between them remained contested for centuries. Lievens trained briefly under Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam before establishing himself as a precocious history painter, portraitist, and etcher.
