Tom Thomson — Canadian, 1877–1917 — Canadian Post-Impressionism
Tom Thomson is one of the foundational figures of Canadian landscape painting, though he died before the formal founding of the Group of Seven, with whom he is closely associated. Working primarily in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, he produced small oil sketches on wood panels directly from nature, returning to his Toronto studio in winter to develop larger canvases such as The Jack Pine and The West Wind.
