William Etty — British, 1787–1849 — British Romanticism

William Etty was a Yorkshire-born painter known for his dedication to the nude figure at a time when the subject was viewed with suspicion in British art. The son of a York miller and baker, he trained at the Royal Academy Schools and studied briefly under Thomas Lawrence before establishing himself through ambitious history paintings drawn from biblical, classical, and literary sources.
