Joseph Stella — American, 1877–1946 — American Modernism / Futurism
Joseph Stella was an Italian-born American painter who became one of the principal figures of early American modernism. After emigrating from Lucania to New York in 1896, he trained at the Art Students League and the New York School of Art before returning to Europe, where direct contact with Italian Futurism shaped his mature direction.
