Gaetano Previati was a leading figure in Italian Divisionism, the late nineteenth-century movement that applied separated strokes of pure color to achieve luminous, often symbolic effects. Born in Ferrara and trained in Milan at the Brera Academy, he moved from early historical and literary subjects toward an increasingly mystical, religious idiom.
