Joseph Mallord William Turner — English, 1775–1851 — English Romanticism
Turner is the central figure of English Romantic landscape painting and arguably the most innovative British artist of the nineteenth century. Trained at the Royal Academy, where he was elected a full Academician at twenty-six, he spent his career pushing landscape and marine painting toward an expressive treatment of light, atmosphere, and weather that anticipated later developments in European art.
