Sir John Lavery, R.A. — Irish, 1856–1941 — Glasgow School / Society Portraiture
John Lavery was an Irish painter best known for his society portraits and depictions of Edwardian leisure. Born in Belfast and trained in Glasgow, London, and Paris, he became associated with the Glasgow School in the 1880s, where exposure to Bastien-Lepage and the plein-air French tradition shaped his loose, tonally restrained handling.
