Isaac Grunewald — Swedish, 1889–1946 — Swedish Expressionism
Isaac Grünewald was among the central figures of early Swedish modernism, instrumental in introducing Fauvist and Expressionist ideas to Scandinavia. He studied in Paris under Henri Matisse from 1908, absorbing the bold color and simplified form that would mark his mature work. Returning to Sweden, he became a leader of the group known as De Unga (The Young Ones) and later The Eight, exhibiting alongside his wife, the painter Sigrid Hjertén.
