Landscape With Waterfall And Figures
Claude Joseph Vernet — French, 1714–1789 — Rococo; marine and landscape painting
Claude Joseph Vernet trained in Avignon and Aix before traveling to Rome in 1734, where he remained for nearly two decades and built his reputation painting harbors, coastal storms, and Italianate landscapes for an international clientele of Grand Tour patrons. His command of atmospheric light—the silvered haze of morning, the theatrical glare of a squall—drew comparisons to Claude Lorrain, though Vernet's sensibility was more naturalistic and his figures more animated.
