Ilmari Aalto — Finnish, 1891–1934 — Finnish Expressionism
Ilmari Aalto was a Finnish painter associated with the November Group (Marraskuun ryhmä), a circle of artists active in the 1910s and 1920s who pushed Finnish painting toward a darker, more expressive idiom drawn from European modernism. He worked principally in landscape and figure painting, favoring heavy impasto, muted earth tones, and a brooding atmosphere that distinguished his generation from the lighter National Romantic tradition that preceded it.
