Thomas Worthington Whittredge — American, 1820–1910 — Hudson River School
Worthington Whittredge was a central figure of the second generation of the Hudson River School, known for landscapes that favor quiet meadows, beech groves, and pastoral light over the dramatic vistas pursued by some of his contemporaries. Born in Ohio, he spent the years 1849 to 1859 in Europe, studying in Düsseldorf and traveling with Albert Bierstadt and Sanford Gifford in Italy.
