A Dominican friar who took his vows in the early fifteenth century, Fra Angelico bridged the late Gothic tradition and the new spatial logic of the Florentine Renaissance. His mature work, undertaken largely for his own order, fused the linear elegance and gilded surfaces of Trecento devotional painting with the clarified perspective and grave human presence developed by Masaccio.
