Friedrich Gauermann — Austrian, 1807–1862 — Austrian Biedermeier
Friedrich Gauermann was among the most accomplished landscape and animal painters of the Austrian Biedermeier period. Born in Miesenbach in Lower Austria, he was trained initially by his father, the landscape painter Jakob Gauermann, before studying briefly at the Vienna Academy. He worked primarily from his native Alpine surroundings, producing detailed studies of livestock, wildlife, and mountain weather that he later composed into finished pictures in his Vienna studio.
