Paul Sawyier spent most of his working life in central Kentucky, painting the landscapes around Frankfort and the Kentucky River palisades. He studied briefly in Cincinnati and later in New York under William Merritt Chase, absorbing the loose brushwork and atmospheric concerns of American Impressionism, which he applied to a distinctly regional subject.
