John White Alexander — American, 1856–1915 — Tonalism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau
John White Alexander began his career as an illustrator at Harper's Weekly before training in Munich and traveling through Europe, where he absorbed the influence of Whistler and the European Symbolists. He settled in Paris in the early 1890s and exhibited at the Salon and with the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, gaining particular recognition for portraits of women rendered in long, sinuous compositions and a restrained tonal palette.
