Gustav Klimt — Austrian, 1862–1918 — Vienna Secession / Symbolism
Klimt was the central figure of the Vienna Secession, the group he co-founded in 1897 in revolt against the conservatism of Vienna's academic establishment. Trained at the Kunstgewerbeschule, he began as a successful painter of historical murals before turning to the ornamental, eroticized style for which he is now known.
