Hubert von Herkomer was a Bavarian-born British painter who became one of the most prominent figures in late Victorian art. After emigrating to England as a child, he trained at the South Kensington Schools and rose to prominence through illustrations for The Graphic, where he documented working-class life with unsentimental directness.
