John Everett Millais — British, 1829–1896 — Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
Millais was a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, formed in London in 1848 alongside Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt. A child prodigy admitted to the Royal Academy Schools at eleven, he became the movement's most technically accomplished painter, producing works of meticulous botanical detail, saturated color, and literary subject matter. Ophelia, painted between 1851 and 1852, remains the defining image of the early Pre-Raphaelite project.
