Valentin Serov was among the leading Russian painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, regarded in his lifetime as the country's foremost portraitist. The son of composer Alexander Serov, he trained under Ilya Repin and at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, and was associated with both the Abramtsevo Colony and the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) circle.
