George Hendrik Breitner was a leading figure of the Amsterdam Impressionist movement, known for his unsentimental depictions of urban life in late nineteenth-century Amsterdam. Trained at the academies of The Hague and Amsterdam, he initially worked alongside the Hague School painters before turning toward the city as his primary subject.
